[NOTES: David Mueller]

1.e4 c5 2.Nc3 d6 3.g3 Nc6 4.Bg2 e5 5.d3 g6 6.Be3 Bg7 7.h3 Nge7 8.Nge2 Nd4 9.0-0 0-0 10.Qd2? Bxh3! 11.f4
[The White bishop is immune 11.Bxh3?? Nf3+ forks the queen.]

11...Bxg2 12.Kxg2 f5 13.fxe5 dxe5 14.Rh1 Rf7 15.Rh2 Rc8?!
[I spent 14 minutes on this "crap move". I was trying to make 15...Nxe2 work, but after 16.Nxe2! (16.Qxe2? f4! 17.gxf4 exf4 finishes things, as if 18.Bxc5? f3+ ) 16...fxe4 17.dxe4! (17.Bxc5? Qd5!-+ ) 17...Qxd2 18.Bxd2 I don't achieve anything; But the computer shows 15...fxe4! Threatening 16...Nf3 16.Bxd4 exd4 17.Nxe4 Nf5! and the Knight heads for a nice post at e3]

16.Bh6 Nxe2 17.Qxe2 f4
This was the position I decided was "more". It's okay, but having seen the computer's plan, 15...fxe4! , I like it better.

18.Qg4 f3+ 19.Kf2?
Kipp wants to leave his rank open for the queen's rook to swing over to the h-file, but there's a tactical problem with this move.

19...Bxh6 20.Rxh6 Qd4+ 21.Kf1 Nf5!
I thought this should mop things up, but Kipp tenaciously fought on.

22.Re1
[I spent 7 minutes making my 21st move, mainly double checking things after 22.Rxg6+?! hxg6 23.Qxg6+ Ng7 Leaves Black with an extra Rook; Even worse for Black is 22.Nb5? Ne3+ 23.Ke1 f2+ 24.Ke2 Nxg4 25.Nxd4 cxd4! ]

22...Rcf8 23.Qg5 Nxh6 24.Qxh6
After some of my deliberations, now I only had 9 minutes left on my clock, but I thought the win should be "easy". Somehow though, I had a premonition that the knight could cause me trouble!

24...Qd7 25.Nd5 Qb5 26.Rb1 c4 27.Nc3 Qc5 28.Rd1 b5 29.Rd2 cxd3 30.Rxd3 b4 31.Nd5 Qxc2 32.Qd2 Qc4 33.Nxb4 Qxe4
[Now I only had 3 minutes. The computer says 33...f2! is a crusher.]

34.Re3 Qc4+
[Now the computer says 34...Qg4! coming around from the other side]

35.Kf2 a5 36.Nd5 Qc5 37.Kf1 Kh8 38.Rxe5 Rd7 39.Qh6!
Not the best move, says the computer. But I'll give it an exclamation mark as a good practical move that makes it possible for me to mess up in severe time pressure. I had about 1 minute on my clock.

39...Qc4+ 40.Kf2 Qd4+?!
[Going after material, but I should have gone for the king with 40...Qc2+ 41.Ke1 (41.Ke3 Qc1+ Bags White's queen) 41...f2+ 42.Kf1 Qd1+ and the pawn queens with check]

41.Kf1 Rdf7
[Of course not 41...Qxe5?? 42.Qxf8# Mate !!]

42.Ne7!
Again not the best move, according to the computer. But Kipp wasn't playing a computer. In fact my time pressure was so severe that I actually played ...Kg8, then realized it wasn't a legal move, put my king back, and then a panic attack consumed me...

42...Qxe5??
[42...Qd3+ 43.Kf2 Qc2+ and it's all over for White]

43.Nxg6+!
Ouch!!!! (Expletive deleted.) I hate losing. Kipp went on to win. Congratulations to him -- it's a classic "swindle". 1-0
